ARTSOUL KOJO
Artist Biography

In years of practice, Ghanaian contemporary artist Danso Awuah- Asante, known as Artsoul kojo’s work is populated by a cast of characters and figures. With vastly diverse approaches he examines his visual imaginations with elements of fine arts, sound art and writing poetry.

Self-taught, Kojo began painting and creating art more as a way of dealing with his introvert nature and depression. His early work and first solo exhibition titled “cherries and gloom” highlighted relationship between beauty and darkness as the major theme. He later worked on a sound experimentation Ep which was released in 2016, expressing the transition from his past mental perspective to a more pure conscious state.

Artsoul focuses his creative works on ideal subject matters inspired from his environment and the human psyche.

"My art is just an expression of my visions and imaginations. I channel my ideas through whatever medium that suits the outcome and clearly expresses well the vision in mind, I make art through paintings, sound and design, each expresses my thoughts and feelings during that period. My goal is to help people broaden their imaginations by seeing things in a new perspective through the way I portray them.

While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by recurrent formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. Each project often consists of multiple works, often in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.

I admire artists such as Velasquez, Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith. Learning the background and history of these artists played and great role and constantly inspires my artistic career."
